Requirement

A major oil operator in UAE was looking for a solution to reduce operating time during memory gauge runs to resume production, and at the same time the service contractor wanted a solution to preserve memory gauges and extend equipment life cycle.

Solution Proposed by Hunting

Hunting Gauge Carrier was proposed during a symposium offering a combined solution that would satisfy both objectives and offers further added values:

  • Memory gauge protection during rig up / rig down, while running in and pulling out of the well.

  • Operational efficiency by reduced operating hours and increasing efficiency with combined runs.

  • The integral shock dampening mechanism within the gauge carrier provides maximum protection to the memory gauges while maintaining a small OD profile enabling efficient and safe mechanical jarring action.

  • The innovative design reduces tool inventory and allows adaptation of one carrier to different types and sizes of memory gauges using a set of extension subs within the gauge carrier package.

  • Easy assembly / disassembly using tangential pin design for simple and quick assembly, eliminating the use of grub screws and pipe wrench torque,

The client proposed three pilot wells to try and approve the technology with the main objective to confirm recorded data quality, feasibility of the combination as well as confirming maximum operating time and possibility to log two wells with the same unit in the same day to increase operational efficiency.

Primary Objective

First Pilot Well Objective

The objective of the first pilot well was to run a set of memory gauges inside Hunting gauge carrier combined with gauge cutter to confirm tubing clearance and acquire pressure temperature survey in one run. These two services are usually run one after the other; tubing clearance is first confirmed by running gauge cutter which would take approximately 2 hours operating time then the memory gauge run exposed to well environment to record data which again takes 3 to 4 hours operating time depending on well environment and operational requirements. Total operating time should be 6-7 hours, Using the Gauge Carrier, the two services could be combined in one run with a maximum of 4 hours operating time.

Second & Third Pilot Wells Objective

The objective of the second and third pilot wells was to run a set of memory gauges inside the gauge carrier combined with gauge cutter to confirm tubing clearance and acquire pressure temperature surveys simultaneously in two different wells with complete rig up and rig down operations carried by the same unit in the same day to confirm possibility to complete two wells in one day.

Job Outcome

All three pilot wells were successfully completed and all targets 100% achieved.

  • The first well was completed on the 27th/06/2024 within 3 operating hours including rig up and rig down.

  • The second and third wells were completed back-to-back on 06th/07/2024 within 6 operating hours.
